Description
Chartogne-Taillet Cuvée Les Barres is a single-plot Champagne from ungrafted Meunier vines planted in 1952.
Les Barres is the best known of Chartogne-Taillet's Merfy plots, and its reputation rests on the vines: a small parcel of ungrafted Meunier, planted in 1952 and still growing on their own roots, which reach as much as three metres into the chalky subsoil. Yields are low and the wine that results is among the most powerful in the range, which is not what most people expect of Meunier. Alexandre Chartogne raises it in 228-litre old barrels and allows deliberately heightened exposure to oxygen, leaving the barrels un-topped for the first few months of maturation. That handling emphasises the mineral, salty character of the plot rather than fruit. Dosage is one to two grams per litre, so the wine finishes dry. This bottling was disgorged in April 2025.
Ready now and built to age, it suits roast pork, mushroom dishes or a mature hard cheese. Serve at 8°C.
