Description

Chartogne-Taillet Hors Série is the house's Côte des Blancs blanc de blancs, disgorged in March 2023.

Alexandre Chartogne's domaine sits at Merfy, north-west of Reims, and Hors Série stands apart from the rest of his wines because the fruit is grown well to the south, in Avize and Oger in the Côte des Blancs. Seven plots contribute, spread between the plain and the slope, and that spread is what gives the wine its balance. Chemin de Chalons, Pierre Vaudon, Fosse le Prêtre and Mont Chenevaux sit on the plain, well exposed to the sun, with topsoils only about twenty centimetres deep over chalk. Mont de Cramant lies at the foot of the slope with deeper soils, still chalky. Les Roches Hautes and Les Barmonts are higher and cooler again, and contribute the taut, linear side of the blend. The wine rests in 228, 350 and 600-litre barrels, then four to five years on lees, with one to three grams per litre of dosage.

Drinking well now and worth keeping, it suits shellfish, grilled white fish or a plate of Comté. Serve at 8°C.
