Chartogne-Taillet Hors Série 2019 Disg. Jun 2024

Chartogne-Taillet Hors Série is a blanc de blancs drawn from seven plots in Avize and Oger, unlike the rest of the range, which comes from Merfy.

Chartogne-Taillet is based at Merfy, north-west of Reims, and almost everything Alexandre Chartogne makes comes from vineyards there. Hors Série is the exception, grown instead in Avize and Oger in the Côte des Blancs, and it has built a strong following since its debut. The seven plots sit on both the plain and the slope, and the mix accounts for the wine's balance. Chemin de Chalons, Pierre Vaudon, Fosse le Prêtre and Mont Chenevaux lie on the plain with good sun exposure and thin topsoils of around twenty centimetres over chalk. Mont de Cramant marks the start of the slope, with deeper but equally chalky soils. Les Roches Hautes and Les Barmonts are higher and cooler, giving taut, linear wine. Élevage is in 228, 350 and 600-litre barrels, followed by four to five years on lees and a dosage of one to three grams per litre. This bottling was disgorged in June 2024.

Ready now and capable of long ageing, it suits oysters, sashimi or roast turbot. Serve at 8°C.
