Description
Château Angélus, Grand Cru Classé is one of the great names of Saint-Émilion, grown on the amphitheatre of south-facing slopes that curves below the medieval town.
The name comes from the Angelus bells of three surrounding chapels, once audible together from the vineyard. The de Boüard de Laforest family has farmed the property for generations, and it was under Hubert de Boüard that Angélus climbed to the very top of the appellation, promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the 2012 classification. The vineyard sits at the foot of the côte on clay and limestone. Merlot dominates the blend, but Cabernet Franc has always been given more room here than at most neighbouring estates, and the wine is matured in French oak, a large proportion of it new.
Suited to roast and braised red meats, game birds and mature cheeses; decant young bottles, as this is a wine built to reward a decade or more in the cellar.
