Description
Château Barthès Bandol Blanc is one of the small number of whites made in an appellation known almost entirely for Mourvèdre, offered in half bottle.
White accounts for only a few per cent of Bandol's production and is built on Clairette, Ugni Blanc and Bourboulenc, with Marsanne, Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino permitted in support. The vines sit on the same limestone and marl restanques that face the sea west of Toulon, where a dry, breezy growing season keeps disease pressure low and makes organic farming of the kind Château Barthès practises straightforward. Whites here are generally picked early to hold acidity, pressed whole bunch and fermented cool in stainless steel, usually without malolactic conversion and without new oak, so the wine keeps its saline cut. The estate is a family holding at Le Beausset, working the same terraces for its rosé and its red.
Dry, textured and saline rather than overtly aromatic, it goes with oysters, grilled sardines and aïoli; serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
