Description
Château Barthès Bandol Rouge is a Mourvèdre-dominant red from an organically farmed estate at Le Beausset, aged in large old wood as the appellation requires.
Bandol red must be at least half Mourvèdre and in practice usually carries a good deal more, with Grenache and Cinsault making up the balance. Mourvèdre is late ripening and demanding, and it is the combination of poor limestone and sandstone soils, terraced south facing restanques and moderating sea air that lets it ripen fully here when it struggles elsewhere in France. The rules require a minimum of eighteen months in wood before release, traditionally in large old foudres rather than barriques, so the oak lends structure and slow oxygenation rather than flavour. Château Barthès sits at Le Beausset in the heart of the appellation, farms organically and works squarely in that traditional register.
Firm, tannic and built for the cellar, it suits daube provençale, roast lamb with garlic and hard sheep's cheeses; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
