Description
Château Bélair-Monange, 1er Cru Grand Classé is a Saint-Émilion grown on the limestone plateau and the steep côtes at the very top of the appellation.
The property lies alongside Château Ausone on the same band of Saint-Émilion limestone, with cellars cut into the rock beneath the vines. It was acquired in 2008 by the Moueix family of Libourne, who added Monange, a name from their own family, to the original Bélair, and who later folded the neighbouring Château Magdelaine into the estate. Since then the vineyard has been extensively replanted and the winemaking pared back, with Merlot leading the blend and Cabernet Franc in support, picked and vinified plot by plot. The Saint-Émilion classification, first drawn up in 1955 and revised roughly every decade, places the estate in its top tier.
Decant and serve at around 17 degrees, with lamb, beef or game; this is a wine to leave alone for ten years and to keep for far longer.
