Description
Château Bélair-Monange, 1er Cru Grand Classé is a Right Bank red from the limestone plateau at the western edge of Saint-Émilion.
Records of a vineyard on this site go back centuries, and under the name Château Belair the estate was long one of the most respected addresses on the plateau, sharing its escarpment with Ausone. The Moueix family of Libourne acquired it in 2008 and added the Monange name, taken from an ancestor, and in 2012 absorbed the vineyard of Château Magdelaine into the property. Merlot makes up the greater part of the planting, with Cabernet Franc, and the vines sit on a shallow clay soil directly over limestone, which holds moisture through dry summers and drains freely in wet ones. The wine is matured in French oak barrels.
Serve with roast or braised red meat, and decant; this is a wine that repays fifteen years or more in a cool cellar.
