Description
Château Bélair-Monange Premier Grand Cru Classé is a Saint-Émilion grown on the limestone plateau and côte immediately alongside Château Ausone.
The property is among the oldest in the appellation and was known simply as Château Belair for most of its history. Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, the Libourne house behind Pétrus and Trotanoy, took it over in 2008 and renamed it Bélair-Monange after Anne-Adèle Monange, a forebear of the family. In 2012 the neighbouring Château Magdelaine, also a Moueix property, was folded into it. The vineyard is Merlot with Cabernet Franc, planted on thin soils over solid limestone, and the cellars are quarried out of the same rock beneath the vines. Yields are kept low, the fruit is picked and sorted by hand, and the wine is raised in French oak in the Moueix manner.
Best with roast lamb, beef or game birds; the wine is built for the cellar, so decant it if opening young.
