Description
Château Bourgneuf is a Merlot-led Pomerol grown on the plateau at the heart of the appellation.
Pomerol has no classification of its own, few grand châteaux and a reputation built entirely on the standing of individual growers. Its plateau is a mix of gravel and clay over a seam of iron-rich subsoil known locally as crasse de fer, and Merlot suits that ground better than anywhere else in Bordeaux, usually with a little Cabernet Franc alongside for structure. Bourgneuf has been in the hands of the Vayron family since the nineteenth century and is often listed under the fuller name Château Bourgneuf-Vayron. The holding is modest in size and is farmed and vinified by the family themselves, with maturation in French oak barrels, a part of them new, before bottling at the property.
Merlot-led Pomerol is generally approachable earlier than Left Bank claret; serve with duck, veal or mushroom dishes after a short decant.
