Description
Château Branaire-Ducru Grand Cru Classé en 1855 is a Fourth Growth of Saint-Julien, drawn from parcels scattered across the commune.
The estate has its origins in the division of the neighbouring Beychevelle property in the seventeenth century, and its vineyard is still made up of plots spread over several of the best gravel croupes of Saint-Julien rather than one block, which gives the blend a range of soils to draw on. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot, Petit Verdot and a little Cabernet Franc. The château and its gravity-fed cellar stand at the southern edge of the appellation. The Maroteaux family bought the property in 1988 and has run it since, through a long programme of replanting and cellar renewal that has lifted the wine's standing considerably over that time.
Serve with lamb, beef or duck, and decant younger bottles.
