Description
Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Grand Cru Classé En 1855 is a Third Growth from Saint-Estèphe, the northernmost of the classed growths of the Médoc.
The heart on the label comes from the Marquis de Ségur, who in the eighteenth century owned Lafite and Latour as well as Calon and is said to have remarked that he made his wine at Lafite and Latour but his heart was at Calon. The name itself is older, and is thought to refer to the small boats that once carried timber across the estuary. The vineyard is a single walled block around the château, on gravel over clay, planted largely to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The property has been comprehensively renovated since a change of ownership in 2012.
A wine for the long haul; decant it, serve with roast beef, lamb or game, and be prepared to wait a decade for it to open out.
