Château Canon La Gaffelière 2022

Château Canon La Gaffelière is a Saint-Émilion grown on the sand and clay at the foot of the côte, just south of the town.

The estate has belonged to the von Neipperg family since 1971, and under Comte Stephan von Neipperg it became one of the properties that changed how the Right Bank was regarded, promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 2012 classification. Its vineyard is unusual in that much of it sits on the lower, sandier ground rather than the limestone plateau, and it carries a high proportion of Cabernet Franc alongside Merlot, with some Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are farmed organically, worked in small parcels and picked by hand, with vinification carried out plot by plot before the final blend is assembled and raised in French oak.

Good with roast lamb, duck and mature cheeses; decant young bottles and allow the wine a few years in the cellar.
