Description
Château Cantemerle, Grand Cru Classé is a Fifth Growth of the Haut-Médoc, from the commune of Macau at the southern end of the peninsula.
Cantemerle lies just south of Margaux, close enough that it is sometimes taken for one of that commune's estates, and its vines sit on gravel within a large wooded park that shelters them. The name is variously explained as chante merle, the song of the blackbird, or as a reference to a merle, a small cannon once used on the site. It was one of only a handful of Haut-Médoc châteaux included in the 1855 classification, and famously it was added late, at the very bottom of the list. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot form the bulk of the blend, with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured in French oak.
A reliable choice with lamb, beef and roast poultry; decant younger bottles, as the wine drinks well for a decade or more.
