Château Capbern 2019

Château Capbern is a Saint-Estèphe red from vineyards running down towards the Gironde estuary, made by the team behind Château Calon-Ségur.

The estate shares its owners and winemaking team with its neighbour Calon-Ségur, a Third Growth, and for many years it was sold as Capbern Gasqueton after the family who once owned both properties. Its vines grow on gravel and clay close to the water, where the estuary moderates temperatures and helps the grapes ripen evenly. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, supported by Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels. It's often recommended as a smart-value way into classic Saint-Estèphe. The 2019 has a complex nose of black fruit and sweet spice, a smooth attack, coated tannins mid-palate and a long, savoury finish.

Serve at around 17 degrees, after a short decant to soften its youthful grip. It's excellent with roast beef, duck breast or a lamb rack, and will keep improving in the cellar over the next decade.
