Description
Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most celebrated estates of Saint-Émilion, grown on gravel and clay in the north-west corner of the appellation where it borders Pomerol.
The vineyard is unlike most of its neighbours. A band of gravel deposited by the Isle river runs through it, giving Cabernet Franc a home it has almost nowhere else on the Right Bank, and the variety makes up roughly half the planting alongside Merlot. The property was assembled in the nineteenth century and rose quickly in reputation, and it was placed in the top rank of the first Saint-Émilion classification in 1955. Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère bought it in 1998, and in 2011 a new cellar designed by the architect Christian de Portzamparc opened, its curved white roof now a landmark among the vines.
A wine to keep for the long term; decant well ahead and serve with plainly roasted lamb, beef or game birds.
