Château Clarke Listrac-Médoc 2009

Château Clarke Listrac-Médoc is a mature, Merlot-led Left Bank Bordeaux from the Rothschild family's estate in Listrac.

In 1973 Baron Edmond de Rothschild bought the run-down property and rebuilt it from scratch, replanting, draining the land and putting in a new cellar. It is still in the family's hands and remains the reference point for the appellation. Clay and limestone, on one of the highest points of the peninsula, suit Merlot, so the estate leads with it, backed by Cabernet Sauvignon. Parcels are vinified separately in temperature-controlled vats, then aged for about fifteen months in French barriques, a good share of them new.

It's well into maturity now: plum and dark berries softened by earth, tobacco and cedar, with settled tannin. Decant carefully off any sediment and serve at 16–18°C with duck, mushroom dishes or aged cheese.
