Description
Description
Château Clinet is a Pomerol from the high central plateau of the appellation, close to Pétrus and Église-Clinet.
Pomerol has no classification, so its pecking order has been settled by drinkers rather than by committees, and Clinet has sat near the top of that unofficial list since the late 1980s. The estate lies on the plateau's clay and gravel over the iron rich subsoil the locals call crasse de fer, the seam that runs beneath the best of Pomerol. The Laborde family acquired the property in the late 1990s and Ronan Laborde has directed it since 2003. Merlot dominates the plantings, with Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Cabernet Franc in support, which is less usual here, and the wine is matured in French oak barrel.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at around 17 degrees, with beef, lamb or mushrooms; it drinks well from about eight years and keeps much longer.
