Description
Château Clos du Marquis is a Saint-Julien red drawn from vineyards belonging to the Léoville Las Cases estate.
The name honours the Marquis de Las Cases, whose family held the vast Léoville property before it was broken up in the years after the Revolution. For a long time the wine was taken to be the second wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, but the estate has since made the position plain: it comes from its own defined parcels rather than from barrels declassified out of the grand vin, and a separate wine, Le Petit Lion, fills the second wine role. The vineyards sit on the gravel soils of Saint-Julien, and the blend leans on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a little Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak.
It is worth five to ten years in the cellar and suits lamb, roast beef or game, served at around 17 degrees in a decent-sized glass.
