Description
Château Closiot Barsac Cuvée Bonneau is a botrytised sweet white from one of the smallest estates in Barsac, made from 98 per cent Sémillon with 2 per cent Muscadelle.
Barsac is the northern of the two communes entitled to the Sauternes appellation, distinguished by its flat limestone plateau and the cooler soils that come with it. Closiot covers eight hectares, small even by local standards next to Climens at 30 and Coutet at 18, and its vines sit on the Clos Bonneau, where red earth studded with pebbles rests on that limestone base. The clos is ringed by Climens, Doisy-Védrines and Coutet, and is planted almost entirely to Sémillon with a little Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc, including four hectares of 100-year-old vines. Jean-Marie Guffens picks under the first sun rather than in the morning mist, in a meticulous selection of berries over six passes across ten days. The wine spends a year in 50 per cent new oak and a further 12 months in vat.
Drinking now and capable of decades in bottle. Serve at 8-10°C with Roquefort, a tarte tatin or seared foie gras.
