Château Closiot Barsac Cuvée Bonneau 375ml 2022

Cuvée Bonneau is Château Closiot's principal Barsac, made from botrytised Sémillon picked in six passes and bottled at 375ml.

Barsac makes its sweet wine on a flat limestone plateau rather than on the slopes of Sauternes proper, and Closiot is among the smallest properties in the commune at eight hectares, against 30 at Climens and 18 at Coutet. The vines lie on the Clos Bonneau, where red earth scattered with pebbles sits over that limestone base, and the relatively cool soils give the wine mineral steel to offset the late-picked fruit. The clos is planted almost entirely to Sémillon, with Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc, and includes four hectares of century-old vines. Jean-Marie Guffens picks under the first sun rather than in the morning mist, in six passes over ten days. The wine ages a year in 50% new oak, then twelve months in vat; the blend is 98% Sémillon and 2% Muscadelle, at 138 g/L residual sugar.

It will keep for decades; serve at 8–10°C with roquefort, foie gras or a tarte tatin.
