Château Closiot Barsac Les Dames de Bonneau 2022

Château Closiot Les Dames de Bonneau is a Barsac made only in years when the estate can work with clean, pure botrytis, picked at the very start of November.

Barsac is the northern of the two communes entitled to the Sauternes appellation, set apart by its flat limestone plateau and by wines that tend to be a little more mineral and linear than those from the slopes further south. Château Closiot covers eight hectares, making it one of the smallest properties in the commune; for comparison, Climens has 30 and Coutet 18. Its vines sit on the Clos Bonneau, red earth dotted with pebbles over the plateau's limestone base, surrounded by Climens, Doisy-Védrines and Coutet. Those soils stay relatively cool, which gives Jean-Marie Guffens's wines the steel and freshness that offsets the late-picked fruit. The clos is planted almost entirely to Sémillon, with a little Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc, and includes four hectares of 100-year-old vines. This cuvée is a draconian selection, pressed in a traditional vertical press and aged 18 months in barrel.

Drinking now and capable of decades in bottle. Serve at 8-10°C with Roquefort, foie gras or a simple almond tart.
