Château Closiot 'Le C de Sec' Bordeaux Blanc 2020

Château Closiot Le C de Sec is the first dry white from Jean-Marie Guffens’ Bordeaux project, grown on the Barsac plateau.

Guffens, who built two well-known Burgundy estates before this, bought the historic Château Closiot from the Belgian wine writer Bernard Sirot. The property covers eight hectares on the Clos Bonneau, a red-earth terroir dotted with pebbles over the limestone base typical of Barsac, with Climens, Doisy-Védrines and Coutet as neighbours. The clos is planted mainly to Sémillon and includes a four-hectare parcel of hundred-year-old vines. The dry wine takes in a portion of the rare Sauvignon Gris alongside the Sémillon, and the fruit is vinified entirely in oak with roughly a quarter new barrels, which gives the wine breadth and a fine-grained texture rather than obvious oak flavour. It is a serious dry white in the old Bordeaux mould rather than a brisk, aromatic one.

Drinking well now and worth five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled crayfish or a creamy fish pie.
