Description
Château Cos d'Estournel, 2eme G.C.C, 1855 is a Saint-Estèphe second growth, recognisable at a distance by the pagodas that crown its cellar.
Louis Gaspard d'Estournel built the estate in the early nineteenth century and shipped his wine as far as the East, returning with the taste for eastern architecture that produced the carved doors and pagoda towers still standing above the vines. The name Cos comes from the old Gascon for a hill of pebbles, and the property sits on a gravel rise at the southern edge of Saint-Estèphe, looking across a small stream directly at Château Lafite in Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the plantings, with Merlot on the cooler clay, and the wine is aged in French oak in a modern gravity-fed cellar built into the slope.
It is made for the long haul and repays fifteen years or more; serve at around 17 degrees alongside roast lamb or aged beef.
