Château Cos d'Estournel 2ème Grand Cru Classé en 1855 2020

Château Cos d'Estournel is a Saint-Estèphe grand cru classé whose Asian-inspired towers make it one of Bordeaux's most recognisable estates.

Ranked a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, Cos occupies a gravel ridge right on the border with Pauillac, facing the vines of Lafite Rothschild. Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, who shaped the modern estate, bred Arab horses and sold his wine as far away as India, and the exotic architecture reflects that history. The current owner, Michel Reybier, has invested heavily in the vineyard and winery, including a striking modern cellar that relies on gravity. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon from the gravel slopes, with Merlot filling out the middle palate, and it spends time in French barrels before release. After a warm, dry Bordeaux summer, the 2020 combines opulent blackcurrant and blackberry with spice and uncommon verve.

A little patience helps: decant for an hour or two if opening now, and serve at around 17 degrees. Venison pie, a thick-cut sirloin or slow-roasted lamb will stand up to its structure. Best cellared for a decade or more to see it at its peak.
