Description
Château Coutet, 1er G.C.C, 1855 is one of the two first growths of Barsac, the commune that holds its own appellation inside the Sauternes zone.
Coutet's vineyard lies in a single stretch on a plateau of limestone under a thin covering of clay and sand, ground that drains sharply and gives the wines of Barsac their comparatively taut shape. The buildings include a square tower dating from the medieval period, when this part of Aquitaine was under English rule. Autumn mists form where the cold Ciron meets the warmer Garonne, encouraging botrytis cinerea to settle on ripe fruit, and pickers then work through the rows again and again over several weeks, selecting only shrivelled berries. Sémillon makes up the great majority of the blend, with Sauvignon Blanc alongside, and the wine ferments and ages in oak barrels.
It is a fine match for foie gras, Roquefort or almond desserts, and should be poured well chilled.
