Description

Château Coutet 1er Grand Cru Classé en 1855 is a first growth sweet wine from Barsac, presented here in a half bottle.

One of only two Barsac estates ranked as first growths in the 1855 classification, this property has been owned by the Baly family since 1977. Its name is thought to come from the Gascon word for knife, a nod to the fresh, cutting acidity that sets the wine apart from its richer Sauternes neighbours. The vineyard lies on clay over limestone, and is planted mainly to Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and a little Muscadelle. Grapes affected by noble rot are picked by hand in several passes, then fermented and matured in French oak barrels. The 2009 vintage is regarded as one of the great recent years for sweet Bordeaux.

Serve well chilled, at around 9 to 11 degrees. Classic matches are foie gras, blue cheese such as Roquefort, fruit tarts and crème brûlée, and it is also very good with spicy dishes. A half bottle pours four to six small glasses, and the wine will keep for decades.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
