Château Coutet 1er Grand Cru Classé en 1855 375ml 2017

Château Coutet is a Barsac Premier Cru Classé in a convenient half bottle, from one of the historic estates of the Sauternes region.

The property traces its origins back several centuries, and its vines have been in the care of the Baly family since the late 1970s. Barsac's soils are shallow red clay and sand over limestone, and they tend to produce sweet wines with extra freshness and a fine, almost mineral line. The blend is mainly Semillon, with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, harvested in several selective passes as botrytis concentrates the sugars. Fermentation and ageing take place in oak. The 2017 brings lime, lemon, ginger, apricot and white flowers, a lively attack and a full mid-palate, finishing long and fresh.

Pour it well chilled with fruit-based desserts, a slice of orange and almond cake or a sharp blue cheese. Savoury pairings work too, such as roast chicken with apricots or a mild Thai curry.
