Château Coutet 1er Grand Cru Classé en 1855 375ml 2018

Château Coutet is a First Growth Barsac with a reputation for freshness and elegance, offered here in a half bottle.

This is one of the oldest estates in the Sauternes region, with a thirteenth-century tower still standing on the property. Owned by the Baly family since 1977, it farms vines on the clay and limestone soils of Barsac, which give lighter, livelier sweet wines than the heavier soils found elsewhere in Sauternes. Semillon makes up most of the blend, with Sauvignon Blanc and a little Muscadelle adding lift and aroma. The grapes are picked by hand in successive passes as noble rot develops, then fermented and aged in oak barrels. The 2018 is pale straw, with bitter orange, grapefruit, ginger and white peach, a supple, fresh palate and a velvety texture.

Serve well chilled, around 8 to 10 degrees. The 375ml size is ideal for sharing after dinner with a crème brûlée, a lemon tart or a cheese plate with blue cheese. It drinks well now and will develop for many years.
