Château Coutet Cuvée Madame 2009

Château Coutet Cuvée Madame is the rare, tiny-production selection made at this Barsac first growth only in the years the estate judges exceptional.

The cuvée is named for Madame Rolland-Guy, who ran Coutet in the middle of the twentieth century, and it is drawn from the oldest Sémillon vines on the property. The selection happens in the vineyard rather than the cellar: a single passage through the chosen rows, on one day, gathering only fruit that botrytis cinerea has reduced almost to nothing. What comes back is a handful of barrels, and in most vintages the estate decides there is nothing worth setting aside at all, so the wine appears only a few times in a decade. It is aged in oak and released well after the grand vin of the same year.

Serve it well chilled and in small measures, with blue cheese or on its own at the end of a meal; bottles of this kind keep for decades.
