Château Coutet La Chartreuse de Coutet, 2nd Vin 375mL 2022

Château Coutet La Chartreuse de Coutet, 2nd Vin is the second wine of Château Coutet, a Premier Cru Classé of Barsac.

The name comes from the chartreuse, the low single-storey country house in the Bordeaux manner that stands on the property beside its far older tower. The wine is drawn from the same vineyard as the grand vin, on the limestone plateau of Barsac, and from the same varieties: Sémillon in the lead, with Sauvignon Blanc and a small share of Muscadelle. Barsac sits where the cold Ciron flows into the warmer Garonne, and the autumn mists this produces allow botrytis cinerea to take hold and shrivel the grapes on the vine. Picking is carried out in successive passes, and the wine is fermented and aged in barrel.

It makes an approachable introduction to the estate and suits foie gras, blue cheese or a fruit tart, served well chilled.
