Château Croizet-Bages Grand Cru Classé en 1855 2016

Château Croizet-Bages is a Pauillac classified growth from the Bages plateau, just south of the town of Pauillac.

Ranked a Fifth Growth in 1855, the estate has been owned since the 1940s by the Quié family, who also own Château Rauzan-Gassies in Margaux. Its vines grow on the gravel soils of the Bages plateau, in a neighbourhood shared with some of Pauillac's best-known names. The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and the wine is matured in oak barrels. In recent years the family has invested in the vineyard and cellar, and the wines have become more precise and polished. 2016 was an excellent year across the Médoc, giving wines with ripe fruit, freshness and fine structure.

Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, beef fillet or a cheese board. A decant of about an hour will help it open, and it has the structure to keep improving for several more years.
