Description
Château d'Aqueria Tavel is a rosé from the one appellation in France that is allowed to make nothing else.
Tavel lies on the right bank of the Rhône, across the water from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and its soils run from rolled quartz pebbles to sand and limestone. The wines are built on Grenache with Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Clairette and Bourboulenc in support, and they are given a spell of skin contact far longer than most rosé receives, which is why they emerge deeply coloured and were historically regarded as a serious wine for the table rather than an aperitif. Château d'Aqueria is among the largest and longest established properties in the appellation, farming a single block of vineyard around its château.
Serve it cool rather than cold, at around 10 to 12 degrees, with grilled meat, charcuterie, bouillabaisse or spiced dishes; it is one of the few rosés that will carry a whole meal.
