Château de Beaucastel Châteauneauf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes Blanc 2022

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneauf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes Blanc is a white Chateauneuf-du-Pape made from the estate's oldest Roussanne vines, and one of the most celebrated white wines of the southern Rhone.

Beaucastel lies at the northern edge of Chateauneuf-du-Pape near Courthezon, on the rounded galets roulés stones and sandy clay that define the appellation. The property has been held by the Perrin family since the early twentieth century, and is one of the few estates to plant all thirteen permitted varieties, with an unusually high proportion of Mourvedre. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically. White Chateauneuf is a small share of the appellation's output, and this cuvee narrows the field further by being made entirely from Roussanne, a low yielding variety that struggles in the heat but rewards patience on the right site. The old vine parcels are picked separately, matured largely in oak and bottled in small quantity.

Serve at about 12 degrees with lobster, roast chicken or a rich fish dish; unusually for a white Rhone, it is built to be cellared for a decade or more.
