Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2021

Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is the flagship red of an estate that has done as much as any to define the modern reputation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Beaucastel lies at the northern edge of Chateauneuf-du-Pape near Courthezon, on the rounded galets roulés stones and sandy clay that define the appellation. The property has been held by the Perrin family since the early twentieth century, and is one of the few estates to plant all thirteen permitted varieties, with an unusually high proportion of Mourvedre. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically. The red is led by Grenache and Mourvedre with Syrah and Counoise, and the whole harvest passes through a brief flash heating before fermentation, a technique used here for generations. Ageing takes place in large old oak foudres rather than new barrels. The high share of Mourvedre sets Beaucastel apart from most of its neighbours and is much of why the wine ages as long as it does.

Decant and serve at 16 to 18 degrees with lamb, game or braised beef; the latter worth seeking out for long cellaring.
