Description
Château de Chamboureau Savennières Roche Aux Moines 'Pré Du Rigourd' is a dry Chenin Blanc from Savennieres-Roche aux Moines, a tiny appellation of its own carved out within Savennieres.
Savennieres is a small appellation on the north bank of the Loire just downstream of Angers, where steep slopes of schist and volcanic rock face south towards the river. It is one of the few places given over entirely to dry Chenin Blanc, and the combination of poor rocky soils, low yields and a sheltered aspect makes wines that are famously slow to open and very long lived. Chenin is picked late here, often in several passes, and matured without heavy oak. Roche aux Moines covers only a few dozen hectares on the steepest part of the hillside and takes its name from the monks who worked the slope in the Middle Ages; the monopole of Coulee de Serrant sits alongside it.
Serve at around 10 to 12 degrees with scallops, roast poultry or aged hard cheese; it is worth decanting when young and rewards long cellaring.
