Description
Château de Chamirey Mercurey Blanc is a white Burgundy from Mercurey in the Cote Chalonnaise, an appellation better known for red wine and all the more interesting for it.
Mercurey is the largest appellation of the Cote Chalonnaise, the stretch of Burgundy running south of the Cote de Beaune, and is planted mainly to Pinot Noir with a smaller share of Chardonnay. The hills here are higher and more broken than the Cote d'Or and the vineyards face in many directions, which is why individual sites matter. Chateau de Chamirey is one of the best known estates of the commune and is run by the Devillard family. White Mercurey accounts for a modest share of the appellation's plantings, so it is made in comparatively small volume. The Chardonnay is hand picked, pressed whole bunch and fermented and aged in barrel, with new oak used sparingly so the site rather than the wood does the talking.
Serve at around 12 degrees with white fish, chicken or a soft cheese; it drinks well on release and holds for several years.
