Château de Coulaine Chinon 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Château de Coulaine Chinon in 1.5L magnum is the estate's Cabernet Franc red in the format that ages most gracefully.

Chinon lies along the Vienne just before it joins the Loire, and its reds are made almost entirely from Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel and sand terraces near the river and clay-limestone slopes above them. Château de Coulaine stands at Beaumont-en-Véron and has belonged to the Bonnaventure family since the fifteenth century, one of the oldest continuously held estates in Chinon; its vineyards have been farmed organically since the 1990s. The estate red is raised in tank and older wood so that the fruit and the herbal, graphite-edged character of Cabernet Franc come through undisguised. The magnum matters here: a 1.5 litre bottle holds twice the wine behind the same size of closure, so the ratio of dissolved oxygen to volume is halved and the wine develops more slowly and evenly than it would in a standard bottle.

Medium-bodied, fresh and peppery, it suits charcuterie, roast pork and grilled vegetables and is excellent lightly chilled at around 15 to 16 degrees.
