Château de Coulaine Chinon 2023

Château de Coulaine Chinon is the estate red of one of the oldest family-held properties in the appellation, made from Cabernet Franc.

Chinon lies along the Vienne just before it joins the Loire, and its reds are made almost entirely from Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel and sand terraces near the river and clay-limestone slopes above them. Château de Coulaine stands at Beaumont-en-Véron and has belonged to the Bonnaventure family since the fifteenth century, one of the oldest continuously held estates in Chinon; its vineyards have been farmed organically since the 1990s. The estate bottling is the house's introductory red, drawn from the lighter gravel and sand parcels rather than from the named old-vine plots the domaine keeps separate. Fermentation is carried out without heavy extraction and the wine is raised in tank and older wood, so it is bottled with its fruit and its herbal, graphite-edged Cabernet Franc character intact rather than masked by oak or tannin.

Medium-bodied, fresh and peppery, it suits charcuterie, roast pork and grilled vegetables, and is very good served lightly chilled at around 15 to 16 degrees.
