Description
Château de Coulaine Chinon La Diablesse is the estate's old-vine Cabernet Franc, from a single parcel of eighty-year-old vines in Les Picasses.
Chinon lies along the Vienne just before it joins the Loire, and its reds are made almost entirely from Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel and sand terraces near the river and clay-limestone slopes above them. Château de Coulaine stands at Beaumont-en-Véron and has belonged to the Bonnaventure family since the fifteenth century, one of the oldest continuously held estates in Chinon; its vineyards have been farmed organically since the 1990s. La Diablesse, the she-devil, is the domaine's old-vine selection, drawn from a single 0.8 hectare block of vines more than eighty years old within the Les Picasses lieu-dit. Vines of that age crop very lightly and root deep into the limestone, which concentrates the fruit and sharpens the wine's mineral line. It is the most serious red the estate makes, raised in wood and released in small quantity.
Deep, firm and savoury, it calls for roast lamb, game birds or a mature hard cheese and rewards decanting; serve at around 17 degrees.
