Château de Coulaine Chinon Les Picasses 2021

Château de Coulaine Chinon Les Picasses is a single-vineyard Cabernet Franc from one of the appellation's most respected clay-limestone slopes.

Chinon lies along the Vienne just before it joins the Loire, and its reds are made almost entirely from Cabernet Franc, grown on gravel and sand terraces near the river and clay-limestone slopes above them. Château de Coulaine stands at Beaumont-en-Véron and has belonged to the Bonnaventure family since the fifteenth century, one of the oldest continuously held estates in Chinon; its vineyards have been farmed organically since the 1990s. Les Picasses is a well-known lieu-dit on the clay-limestone coteau above Cravant-les-Coteaux, historically regarded as one of the sites in Chinon capable of producing genuinely long-lived reds. The domaine's holding runs to 2.4 hectares of vines over forty years old, and the combination of limestone subsoil and older plantings gives smaller berries, firmer tannin and a more mineral profile than the estate cuvée.

Structured and savoury with fine chalky tannin, it suits roast lamb, duck and mushroom dishes and will improve for a decade; serve at around 16 to 17 degrees.
