Description
Château de La Chaize Bourgogne Gamay Noir is a red from the Beaujolais made under an appellation that few people know exists.
Chateau de la Chaize is one of the landmarks of the Beaujolais, a seventeenth century house on the slopes of Brouilly with a barrel cellar running the length of the building. The estate has been substantially renovated in recent years and its vineyards converted to organic farming. Gamay is grown here on granite soils and fermented whole bunch in the semi carbonic manner that gives the region's reds their lift. Bourgogne Gamay was created in 2011 and is unusual among Burgundian appellations in that it requires Gamay rather than Pinot Noir, and the fruit must come from the ten cru villages of the Beaujolais. It exists because the crus sit administratively within greater Burgundy, and the appellation gives growers there a way to bottle cru grown Gamay under a Bourgogne label.
Serve lightly chilled, at around 14 degrees, with charcuterie, roast chicken or a summer lunch; it is made for drinking young.
