Description
Château de la Tour Grand Cru Clos Vougeot Cuvée Classique is the domaine's principal bottling from six parcels spread across the largest single holding inside the Clos.
The Clos de Vougeot is a fifty-hectare grand cru in the Côte de Nuits, walled by the Cistercians and today divided among some eighty owners; Château de la Tour is the only estate with its cellars inside the wall. Its six parcels vary considerably in size and position. The main ones lie in the middle of the Clos, in the lieux-dits Montiottes Basses, Quatorze Journaux and Quartier Marei Bas, the last of which is also home to a parcel planted in 1910; the smallest sit at the foot of the slope in Quatorze Journaux and Baudes Saint Martin, and there is a holding at La Plante l'Abbé at the top, near the château and the Grands Échezeaux boundary. The vineyards have been farmed organically for well over twenty years and average fifty to sixty years of age. The wine is fermented with whole bunches and no added yeast, then aged in fifty per cent new oak from barrels made to the domaine's specification.
It rewards a decade or more in the cellar; decant and serve at 16-18°C with roast game birds, beef or Époisses.
