Description
Château de la Tour Grand Cru Clos Vougeot Cuvée Classique comes from six parcels spread across the Clos, all now averaging around seventy years of age.
Clos de Vougeot runs from the château at the top of the slope down to the RN74, and where a grower's vines sit within the fifty-hectare walled vineyard matters a great deal. Château de la Tour draws mainly on mid-slope ground, with some plots higher and lower: the lieux-dits Montiottes Basses and Quartier Marei Bas, the latter also home to the 1910 Vieilles Vignes parcel, together with small holdings in Quatorze-Journaux and Baudes-Saint-Martin at the foot of the slope and La Plante L'Abbé at the top, near the château and the Grands-Échezeaux boundary. The vineyards have been managed organically for more than twenty years. Fermentation uses roughly 50 per cent whole bunches in old concrete vats, ageing is in barrels from the Burgundian cooper Stéphane Chassin with 30 to 50 per cent new wood, and the wine is bottled unfiltered.
Give it eight years and drink over the following two decades. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, game pie or a mature hard cheese.
