Château de la Tour Grand Cru Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 2020

Château de la Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes is selected from the oldest vines in the clos, most of them planted in 1910 and standing mid-slope at the heart of the vineyard.

Clos de Vougeot is the largest grand cru of the Côte de Nuits at just over 50 hectares, walled by the Cistercians and today shared among some eighty owners; Château de la Tour holds the single biggest parcel and is the only estate to make its wine within the walls. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée sets a threshold of at least 70 years of vine age and takes only the best plots. Many of these vines yield just a few bunches each, which is much of the reason for the wine's intensity and structural weight. A scattering of Pinot Beurot, the local name for Pinot Gris, is interplanted in these rows and is picked and vinified alongside the Pinot Noir. Fermentation used 70 per cent whole bunches and the wine was raised in 45 per cent new oak, making it deeper and firmer than the estate's Classique.

Built for the long haul, and worth a decade before opening. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, hare or a well-aged hard cheese.
