Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2020

Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a southern Rhône red from one of the appellation's oldest and most historically minded estates.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape takes its name from the fourteenth century popes at Avignon, who planted vines on the plateau above the Rhône, and it became the model for the French appellation system in the 1930s. Thirteen grape varieties are permitted, and Nalys is among the handful of estates that grows all of them. Its vineyards lie on the Nalys plateau, close to the celebrated La Crau sector, on a mix of sandy soils and the rounded galets roulés that store the day's heat and return it to the vines overnight. The property was bought by the Guigal family of Ampuis in 2017, since when the cellar has been rebuilt and the vineyard reworked parcel by parcel.

Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with slow cooked lamb, daube or roast game birds; it will hold for a decade or more.
