Description
Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé is a Mourvèdre-led rosé grown at 300 metres on the highest vineyard in the appellation.
Bandol sits on the Mediterranean coast east of Marseille and is the French home of Mourvèdre, a late-ripening variety that needs the heat and reflected light this natural amphitheatre gives it. Pibarnon's organically farmed terraces, or restanques, climb the pine-covered Colline du Télégraphe above the Baie de Bandol, high enough for cool nights and steady sea breezes. The soil is unusual: les marnes bleues, a chalky blue-tinted clay full of microfossils, also found in the Jura and Pomerol and valued for its low pH and water-holding capacity. The blend is 60% Mourvèdre to 40% Cinsault. The Cinsault is pressed directly to tank for perfume and balance while the Mourvèdre is bled saignée-style after several hours on skins for grip; the juices are blended before a wild-yeast ferment, and the wine rests six months in tank.
At its best over the next two years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled prawns, salade niçoise or roast chicken.
