Description
Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé comes from the highest vineyard in the appellation, on a rare blue-tinted marl found in few other places in France.
Bandol sits on the Mediterranean coast east of Marseille and is built around Mourvèdre, a late-ripening variety that needs exactly the heat and sea air the appellation offers. Château de Pibarnon occupies an amphitheatre of terraces, or restanques, on the pine-covered Colline du Télégraphe, at 300 metres above the Baie de Bandol the highest vineyard in the region, where altitude and sea breezes keep the nights cool. The soil is the estate's real distinction: les marnes bleues, an uncommon and highly chalky blue-tinted clay rich in microfossils, also found in the Jura and in Pomerol, valued for its low pH and its capacity to hold water. The blend is sixty-five per cent Mourvèdre to thirty-five per cent Cinsault. The Cinsault is pressed directly to tank for perfume and balance; the Mourvèdre is bled saignée-style after several hours on skins for grip and structure. Farming is certified organic.
Vinous enough to drink right through a meal, and it will hold a year or two. Serve at 10-12°C with bouillabaisse, grilled octopus or roast chicken.
