Description
Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé is a Mourvèdre-dominant rosé from old vines on terraces 300 metres above the Baie de Bandol.
Bandol occupies a natural amphitheatre above the Mediterranean east of Marseille, and Mourvèdre is the variety the appellation is built on. Château de Pibarnon's vineyards are cut as terraces into the pine-covered Colline du Télégraphe, among the highest sites in Bandol, where altitude and moderating sea breezes ensure cool nights and fresh conditions. What really sets the estate apart is its soil: les marnes bleues, an uncommon and highly chalky blue-tinted clay rich in microfossils, also found in the Jura and in Pomerol, where it is prized for its low pH, its water-retentive properties and its influence on freshness and structure. This rosé is sixty-five per cent Mourvèdre to thirty-five per cent Cinsault, from old, low-yielding vines, and it was matured for six months in neutral oak. The vineyards are certified organic.
Substantial enough to drink through a meal and good for a year or two in bottle. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled prawns, salade niçoise or roast rabbit.
