Description
Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé Nuances is a 100 per cent Mourvèdre micro-cuvée made in the way Bandol rosé once was, for keeping rather than for drinking young.
The fruit comes from specific low-yielding old-vine plots on the estate, including the prized Bel Air parcel, and the wine is farmed organically like the rest of the property. Where the classic Pibarnon rosé is direct-pressed and bottled early, Nuances takes a longer road: seven days of skin contact, then the juice run off saignée-style without pressing, so nothing hard or phenolic enters the wine. Fermentation and ageing proceed with natural yeasts in a combination of Italian amphorae and a 30-hectolitre Stockinger foudre, and the élevage is considerably longer than for the standard bottling. The result is a rosé of real depth, potent and spicy rather than delicate, and one that behaves more like a white wine of substance than a summer drink.
Enjoyable now and able to develop over several years. Serve at 10-12°C in the cooler months with roast pork, a seafood stew or grilled quail.
